SCotland’s ONly led room

WHYNOT NIGHTCLUB EDINBURGH

Installation of LED wall system

Scotland’s first completely LED panelled room was first installed est 2017. at Whynot Nightclub.

However this was replaced, as a collaborative installation with Edinburgh company Studio 4, with a super high resolution p2 spec LED panel in 2022. P2 was specified due to how close the customers would be to the panels and therefor the highest level resolution was needed to create immersive, pixelation free graphics.

LED walls require substantial power, so a plan for sufficient fused power points and sequential startup using delayed contactors were put in placed to avoid issues with power surging. Data transmission and control involved a Novastar video processor, custom stream deck for user control of the format and Resolume Arena pushing the content.

One of the challenges was dealing with an uneven original substrate requiring new timber strapping levelled to within a one mm tolerance across the entire room. Panels were then mounted in rows and collumns across the ceilings and walls and interconnected accordingly.

Another challenge being the venue had to remain open throughout the change-over to the new system. This required vigilant planning and management of the project to ad-hear to the staged installation schedule and keep the room open and operational to a workable extent.

A custom design solution was also implemented to protect the wall areas which were exposed to nightclub customers. Although an IP rated , impact reisitant module were specified. An additional layer of protection was installed used Lexan polycarbonate and black aluminium flat-bar to create a neat picture frame aesthetic.
